At CareVets, we believe that for your pet to live a long and healthy life a careful approach to weight management is important. Pet obesity is a large problem in New Zealand and can lead to many health problems. These can include joint complications, diabetes, heart disease, increased blood pressure, difficulty breathing, decreased liver function, increased anaesthetic risk, digestive disorders, skin problems, decreased quality of life and more.

If you are unsure if your cat or dog is overweight, there are some possible signs you can check for:

• Their ribs cannot be easily felt
• Their waistline is no longer obvious
• They are obsessed with food and/or inactive most of the time
• Their collar or clothing has had to be loosened or no longer fits

Our Veterinarians and nurses are trained to give expert advice regarding nutrition and exercise. If you feel your pet may be overweight, feel free to come and see us and our team can assess your pet. We will rule out any underlying medical issues that may be contributing before recommending a weight management program to suit your pets’ health goals.
